Kanopy had this Canadian horror anthology show from 2024 available for streaming. Running six episodes, it was based on the stories published in r/nosleep subreddit. Each episode consists of a mains tory along with an interview with the original writer.
I like a good anthology series and six episodes seemed doable, so I jumped in.
Here are the six episodes:
“Into the Unknown”: A black square appears in an apartment complex. People get captivated by it and then suspicious toward one another.
“Fixed Frequency”: A group of teenagers ride their bikes around a neighborhood, using walkie-talkies to prank people over their baby monitors. Then, a sinister voice talks to them and they begin being hunted.
“Starlight”: A guy is obsessed with becoming a celebrity and is given the chance to go on a game show. Things are way more sinister than they seem.
“Carry”: A young woman gets pregnant but learns the baby is not viable. Her religious community forces her to carry it to term. What she births is … well …
“Plastic Smile”: Abigail grew up in a house with addicts for parents and her only company was a creepy plastic doll.
“Whistle in the Woods”: A girl names Sawyer wants to spend the night at her friend’s house. Her friend’s mom has a very strict early bedtime. Why? There’s something in the woods …
Anthology shows can often be uneven. This show is no exception. There are some skippable episodes (“Starlight” plays like Ellen Burstyn’s plot in Requiem for a Dream) and others that are must-see. I liked “Into the Unknown” for its take on “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. “Final Frequency” and “Whistle in the Woods” play on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark-type horror. “Carry” has an interesting concept but the end didn’t stick with me (seriously, I don’t remember what happened).
My favorite? Plastic Smile. It’s a take on a creepy doll story that has a twist that shook me. Plus, the performances are phenomenal.
