A Valiant Effort: The H.A.R.D. Corps and Magnus Robot Fighter

51nzmovacdl._sx248_bo1204203200_I’m doing two series in one entry because there were only three total comics for both of them:  The H.A.R.D. Corps #16 and 21 and Magnus Robot Fighter #24.  Plus, I have more to say about the latter than the former.

I vaguely remember the H.A.R.D. Corps from the Deathmate crossover and I think the reason why is that I don’t find them particularly interesting.  There’s something with Harbinger (another title that I don’t have copies of but doesn’t sound interesting), that villain named Harada, and a riff on Challengers of the Unknown and secret agent stuff that I kind of blew over.  So it’s a hard pass from me.

Magnus Robot Fighter was just the one issue and was about Magnus leading an uprising in a robot gladiator arena in the far-flung future.  It reminded me a little bit of classic gladiator movies like Spartacus as well as classic sci-fi (it doesn’t hurt that one of the robot characters looks like she was based on the female robot from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis).  I was also reminded of that great Machine Man miniseries from the 1980s published by Marvel (h/t to Professor Alan for sending it my way a few years ago).  This also seemed to be leading into something important for the book (and would be crossing into Rai and the Future Force with the next issue, an issue that I actually owned at random back in the day but never kept.

So I think I will do with this what I did with Eternal Warrior:  hold onto it and see if any other issues make me more interested.  If I find them on the cheap and they are, I’ll keep going; if not, I’ll send them packing.

Keep, Sell, Donate, or Trash?

The H.A.R.D. Corps:  Trash.

Magnus:  Keep.
