Uncollecting Update February 2020

Well, as always, I’ll start with my numbers for the month …

Media consumed # (remaining/total)
Comics Read: 21 (326/355)
Trade Paperbacks/Graphic Novels Read: 2 (64/74)
Books Read: 1 (140/148)
Movies to Watch: 3 (73/78)
TV Shows Completed: 0 (17/17)
Podcast Episodes Remaining: 85

I think that in my most recent reflection, I was talking about a backslide and about habit tracking. I think that’s been one of the better developments of this year, and in the last couple of weeks, I’ve been a little more on top of the habit improvement. Yes, I am not exactly doing everything right every single day, but as I was sitting here and looking over that chart as well as paying some bills, I saw a slight uptick in the direction of things that are positive.

As far as the tracking I’m doing here is concerned, I’d say that I was pretty steady through February. Yes, my podcast episodes went up significantly, but a lot of that is because I added two new shows to my lineup, one of which has more than 20 episodes available (and I’ve only listened to seven). The comic book reading was up a little bit since the prior month, although I’m thinking of alternating reading my run of The Badger with something else because those books are starting to feel like a bit of a chore.*

Books have been a little weird. I feel like I’m reading quite a bit but there’s also some stuff that either gets added to my reading load because of work or I wind up being slowed down because of the book’s density. I also have to admit that there are times when I wonder if my desire to read all of the books I have winds up hurting my reading comprehension because I get focused on the quantity of it rather than the quality. But there have been many times in my life where I don’t fully remember what I have read until I go back over it or discuss it. This, by the way, is why I wonder if I have had ADHD or something similar since I was a kid.

All that aside, the continued process here along with the progress that I have made has me thinking about what the next steps will be once I really do start to hit my goals. For example, my Netflix DVD queue is down to somewhere in the thirties and I’m starting to wonder if I still need to pay for the DVD subscription, especially since I am only using it for those times when I’m home. That’s mostly the summer, which is when I tend to get through a few movies a week, but then I start to wonder if a few movies over the course of a few months are really worth paying for it all year. And I know that I’ve been very vocal about keeping one’s physical media, but I have been considering using the public library’s DVD collection more often. But I won’t do anything until it’s absolutely clear.

And I’m also considering what I want to keep in my comic collection when I finally get through that longbox of unread books. My comic shop has been actively buying up collections and while there’s certain books that I will never sell (mostly my 1980s/1990s Titans books), I’m pretty sure I have a few that I would part with if given the chance.

But I’ll cross those bridges when I come to them.

*Alan’s totally getting a comics package at some point.
