Army @ Love

When I rifled through the bins at last year’s Baltimore Comic-Con. I came across several issues of a Vertigo series from several years back called Army @ Love. he covers looked intriguing enough, and though it would be interesting. I mean, how do you combine romance and war books?

Cynically, it seems.

Written by Rick Veitch and drawn by Veitch and Steve Erskine, Army @ Love is the story of a “Forever War” in the middle east (Afblammistan) where a “morale boosting” department is sex and relationships between troops to meet their goals. So it’s a “free love” army with plenty of nudity and other salacious stuff in the book.

There are a couple of interesting storylines int eh book. One is that of Allie, the wife of one of the officers who is having an affair at home and is then brought to the front where she is kidnapped and dropped off in Mongolia. She seems to fall in love with a “native” there and becomes his new wife, but he’s been paid to take her as a way to get her out of the picture so her husband can do his job better.

Veitch is going for military and war satire and also hits upon the influence of corporations (there’s a billionaire who’s running a lot of the show). Some of the satire lands; other times, it doesn’t. It has a lot of storylines going on that makes it hard to follow at points. Although it might have been me who didn’t just get it.
