The Uncollecting Update April 2024

As always, let’s start with the numbers …

Podcast Episodes Remaining: 89

So I did remember to log this month. And I was reading a lot. And actually watching a lot, but most of that was hockey playoffs and you don’t uncollect sports (well, unless you get fed up with how much your team sucks, which is why I stopped watching the Giants every football season).

Last weekend (when I intended to write this post in the first place) was Free Comic Book Day. Since my LCS does their “get more free comics with cans of food” promotion (and they collected a serious amount of food for the local food bank), I got 10 comics instead of the usual 5. There are still a few that I haven’t read, but I’m not really going to “review” anything except to say that I’m more willing to give something a pass if it’s free. That being said, DC’s Absolute Power crossover doesn’t seem that interesting. I’m only half paying attention to the DCU at this point because of Nightwing and The Titans (and I’m close to dropping the latter because of yet another Trigon storyline), but I’m not a huge fan of this version of Amanda Waller. Having the DC Infinite app makes the decision not to buy such storylines easier.

Speaking of apps, that one and Marvel Unlimited have been getting a workout lately because I’ve continued to read my way through Legion of Super-Heroes (I’m still a few years before The Great Darkness Saga) and over at Marvel, I’ve been reading their Alien comics as well as the Darth Vader books. While I’m not going to recommend that you plunk down the cash for the physical copies of them, I would say that reading them on the app has been great, so if you have the means (or find a trade at your library), do so.

That leads me to what I guess is the latest in “collecting” insted of “uncollecting”, which is the quarter bin sale that my LCS had along with FCBD. Several longboxes were lined up outside the store and I did my best to flip through most of them, then walked away with about $10 worth of comics. I’m sure that most of them will wind up in the recylcing bin, especially because some of them do have too much of a mildew smell, but I really did grab some random shit. And some of that random shit is incomplete miniseries that I’m going to have to finish collecting before I buy. I do this to myself, don’t I?

Anyway, May marks the school year winding down and when we roll into June, I’m going to have to do another inventory and purge from the collections. There’s just too much stuff hanging around here and I want to make sure my numbers are accurate. Until then, though, maybe I’ll put a little bit more of a dent in all of this.
